Muted by no Hope for Ceasefire in the Gaza War
A narrow strip of land on the eastern Mediterranean known as the Gaza Strip is suddenly back in global focus. Hundreds have alreadt died, and widespread destruction is endemic to the spiralling humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, there was a sliver of hope in the latest round of ceasefire talks, though hesitant and cloaked with doubts.
Background of the Conflict
The Israelis-Palestinians crisis has a history of decades, in which political talks most often result in stagnation and conflict. It started in East Jerusalem, where rioting erupted over land disputes which led to fighting at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and a volley of rockets from Gaza that hit Israel. The last wave of Israeli retaliatory airstrikes inflicted heavy civilian casualties and massive destruction in the tight confine that is Gaza.
Efforts of Mediation Abroad
But as the strife escalated and violence erupted throughout every quarter, a cry for peace silence… all overrated. Egypt (also, as I describe it in my book, a major Middle East mediator) totally participated by engaging U.N. —U. S.–Qatar shuttle diplomacy. Two of the efforts were intended for a short-term humanitarian ceasefire lasting only four or five days to enable Gaza’s dead to be buried and emergency steps taken.
The negotiations in Cairo got off to a rocky start and were troubled from the beginning by a fundamental lack of trust, as well as fundamentally clashing interests between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli determination to disarm Hamas is a major sticking point as it leaves the terrorist organization with no intention of doing so. This has enforced a blockage which led to the exacerbation of human crisis in Gaza, and It placed unpaid goods with raising pain.
But diplomatic sources have told the BBC, a top news website in the world, that these talks are making “deep” progress. It is not yet clear if a ceasefire, even in the short term, would translate into some sort of agreement with Washington. The two sides are also negotiating the creation of a buffer zone, an international observer and exit points from both borders.
Humanitarian Concerns
Ceasefire negotiations: Yes, this is occurring amidst a sad humanitarian situation in Gaza. The latest round has only compounded their misery, leaving more than two million in the district short of food and other basics. Homes, schools and hospitals were destroyed by the debris which had complicated rescue efforts.
They are demanding a permanent ceasefire to police the delivery of vital goods and restoration of essential services. And yet, the negotiations themselves are taking place against a backdrop of violent parochial theater by both sides — constant allegations from them that war isn’t over yet and each has violated another ceasefire agreement.
The Road Ahead
The immediate impact might be a pause from fresh fighting, but this latest flareup is only a symptom: the root causes that continue to power such violence remain alive. Coordination on larger issues who of statehood, right(s) to return of Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem status/ mutual recognition also foresaw any advancement into anger.
Conclusion:
As KreativanSays, the cease fire process once again going on in Gaza today is an important, though very precarious attempt to break out of the cycle of violence that visited this troubled strip time and again over decades. Although the Taliban ceasefire gives us a breather, it is not the solution for this 18 year long war. To achieve a peace that lasts will require long-term international engagement, some adroitness and above all genuine goodwill – by the warring family members themselves in cooperating with diplomatic course. That the international community has a stake and responsibility in such efforts goes without saying: disciplinary battalions are an indispensable condition for any stable future there.
